AXREM is proud to unveil a powerful new resource: our Radiotherapy Video, created to support patients navigating the often daunting journey of cancer treatment. This video is more than an educational tool, it’s a heartfelt offering of clarity, empathy, and reassurance.

Radiotherapy can be a confusing and intimidating prospect, especially when patients are already grappling with the emotional weight of a cancer diagnosis. Our video seeks to answer the question so many face: “What does that mean?” with warmth, honesty, and expert insight.

At the heart of the video is Andy Tudor, who courageously shares his personal experience of receiving radiotherapy for a second brain tumour. His story is a moving reminder of why patient understanding and emotional support are essential in every step of the treatment journey.

Andy Tudor said upon the release of the video “This would have been incredibly helpful to me after I was told I needed radiotherapy. The lack of patient centred information added to the real anxiety about what to expect before, during and after treatment. I’m therefore delighted to help create this valuable resource to help patients and their families better understand what radiotherapy is and isn’t, at such a difficult time of their lives”

The video also features expert contributions from members of AXREM’s Radiotherapy group:

  1. Dan Baines (Elekta)
  2. Stephanie Elliott (Varian)
  3. Dave Kynaston (Brainlab)

Together, they offer clinical and professional perspectives that reflect the compassion and commitment embedded in AXREM’s membership. Their insights help demystify radiotherapy and reinforce the importance of patient-centred care.

David Kynaston, Convenor of the AXREM Radiotherapy Special Focus Group said “Radiotherapy plays a vital role in cancer treatment, but can feel like a large step into the unknown for many patients following a cancer diagnosis. With treatment techniques, machines and devices differing depending on cancer types, it’s important to help patients understand some of the things to expect. As members of AXREM, our shared goal is to make radiotherapy as accessible, effective and patient-focused as possible. The creation of this video with Andy is something that we felt would act as an important step towards improving access and awareness for anyone who may face the prospect of a cancer diagnosis in the future.”

We encourage anyone reading this or who has watched the video to please share with anyone preparing for radiotherapy, it could be the reassurance they need.

This initiative exemplifies AXREM at its best: members uniting to empower patients, reduce fear, and foster understanding. It’s a testament to our shared values of innovation, collaboration, and humanity in healthcare.

Sally Edgington, AXREM Chief Executive Officer said “This video is a powerful example of what happens when our members come together with purpose and compassion. Radiotherapy can feel overwhelming, and patients deserve clarity, empathy, and support, not just clinical excellence.

I’m incredibly proud of Andy Tudor for sharing his story so bravely, and grateful to our Radiotherapy group: Dan, Stephanie, and David for lending their voices and expertise. This is AXREM at its best: collaborative, human, and deeply committed to making a difference.

If this video helps even one person feel less alone, more informed, and more empowered, then we’ve done something truly meaningful”.

Watch the video. Share the message. Support the journey.

Note:

AXREM members supply the majority of diagnostic medical imaging and radiotherapy equipment installed in UK hospitals. In doing so, our member companies and their employees work side by side with Radiologists, Radiographers, Practitioners, Oncologists and a wide range of healthcare professionals in delivering healthcare to patients using our technologies.

Our members therefore have unique knowledge, experience and insight into the workflow and challenges faced by healthcare professionals on a day-to-day basis, which enables us to develop and offer innovative solutions to improve the speed and quality of diagnostic procedures and treatments with our ultimate aim of improving patient care.

Although our members operate in a highly competitive commercial environment and in strict conformity with UK laws and regulations, certain issues such as this require focus and resolution on an industry-wide basis.
