CVD Prevention and Recovery Conference
The Convenzis virtual CVD Prevention and Recovery Conference will provide a timely platform for NHS Cardiologists to listen, learn, and engage with sector leading speakers and peers from across the UK. The event will share new policy updates and best practice with a particular focus on Prevention and Recovery.
The NHS Long Term Plan identified cardiovascular disease as a clinical priority and the single biggest condition where lives can be saved by the NHS over the next 10 years.
The Plan set out the ambition for the NHS to help prevent over 150,000 heart attacks, strokes, and dementia cases over the next 10 years and outlines how the NHS, with support from partners in the voluntary and community sector and in other national organisations, will meet this ambition.
The National CVD Prevention Programme was set up to develop targeted interventions to optimise care by, maximising diagnosis and treatment to minimise both individual risk factors and population risk.
The plan aims to underpin some of the key commitments set out in the NHS Long Term Plan. It will do this by:

National overview and key challenges (Confirmed)
There are around 5.9 million people living with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in England, including 1.8 million who have coronary heart disease, 1.1 million who have atrial fibrillation (AF) and 500,000 people who have been diagnosed with heart failure. The annual costs related to heart and circulatory disease are an estimated £7.4 billion. This opening presentation aims to showcase the work NHS England are doing to support service providers and drive down CVD related elective care backlogs.
The use of the Ortus iHealth digital platform in the delivery of cardiovascular disease health checks to NHS staff
ELoPe (East London Cardiovascular Disease Group) in collaboration with Ortus iHealth have been developing a staff CVD prevention clinic run by a specialist team, seeking to risk stratify, educate and support all Barts Health NHS Staff to improve their overall physical health and minimise their future risk of heart disease and stroke.
CVDPREVENT: How can audit data inform CVD prevention in primary care (Confirmed)
In this presentation some of the key findings from the CVDPREVENT audit data will be highlighted, demonstrating national improvement opportunities for the prevention of CVD. A demo of the CVDPREVENT online Data & Improvement Tool will show how the data can be accessed online and emphasise the variation in CVD prevention between different systems and different demographic groups. A discussion will follow on how some of these tools could be used for quality improvement on the ground.
Doing things differently – proactive care and CVD prevention (Confirmed)
Our ageing population has increased the number of people living with long term conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and COPD. These conditions are difficult to manage well in routine general practice and suboptimal treatment and variation is longstanding. This has been further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting our care and routine management for people with these conditions.
The Fuller Review highlighted the opportunity for Primary Care Networks (PCNs) to deliver more efficient, personalised care. But the report emphasised the need for a sense of urgency around providing proactive care and that this will only be achievable if we create both the conditions to enable locally led change
This talk will bring Dr Matt Kearney, GP and Helen Williams together to talk about UCLP’s work preventing CVD through our development and implementation of the Proactive Care Frameworks.
We will also be announcing the launch of our latest proactive care framework on heart failure.
