Enhancing Pathology Transport: Leveraging Live Tracking and Data Analysis for Optimized Service Delivery (Confirmed)

Mark will present how the in-house transport team supported a multidisciplinary effort to enhance pathology transport within the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust region. The project focused on two main objectives:

  1. Cost Reduction and Service Improvement:
  • Assessing third-party spending with courier companies and taxis to potentially transfer some of these services to the in-house fleet, aiming to reduce costs and enhance service delivery.
  1. Optimisation of Specimen Collection:
  • Optimizing and improving specimen collection from 40 GP practices in North Manchester to increase transport frequency and decrease specimen turnaround time at the laboratory.

By implementing a data and analytics function, the transport team was able to:

  • Provide a detailed analysis of 3rd party transport activity
  • Overlay 3rd party journeys on top of the in-house routes to identify quick wins
  • Provide live route tracking.
  • Measure the age of patient specimens.
  • Deliver system-wide improvements that increased patient access to phlebotomy and improved patient diagnostic outcomes.
