Understanding Genomics in the NHS: Inperson Conference 2023
Genomics is the study of the body’s genes, their functions and their influence on the growth, development and working of the body – using a variety of techniques to look at the body’s DNA and associated compounds. NHS ENGLAND
As a country, the UK is considered a leader in Genomics. However, there is still little known about the role of Genomics and its powerful uses across the healthcare system. Our upcoming conference services aim to shed some light on this area and provide clear guidance and practical insights for sector professionals.
Health Education England is very much leading the way in Genomics education and has developed a Genomics Education Programme which aims to deliver the learning and development necessary to enable both current and future NHS professionals to harness the power of genomic medicine for patient benefits.
The NHS Long Term Plan also outlined a strategic focus on using and developing Genomics across the country. These plans include:
In support of the NHS, all Convenzis events are complimentary, and CPD accredited. If you are an NHS senior manager and lead interested in Genomics and its potential uses, please get in touch to secure your free place today.
Research sources: Health education England, NHS England and Improvement, King’s fund.
Convenzis events are highly regarded for their ability to drive strategic level change and transformation within the healthcare industry. Our events bring together senior healthcare leaders and decision-makers from across the NHS and wider healthcare sector, with the aim of identifying and implementing innovative approaches to address the most pressing challenges facing the industry today.
Our upcoming event will be the starting point of a series of inperson that are free for the NHS and the wider healthcare ecosystem to utilise.
We plan to break the event down into 4 manageable and key areas:
Bioinformatics leads
Cancer Genetic Leads
Clinical Geneticists
Clinical Scientists
Consultants in Clinical Genetics
Consultants
Data Analysts
Data Scientist
Diagnostics Leads
Genetic Technologists
Genomics technicians
Oncology Consultants
Paediatric Consultants
Service Managers

The future of pre-emptive pharmacogenomics (Confirmed)
There is clear data from well-designed large scale studies of pre-emptive pharmacogenomics using small panel tests that adverse drug reactions can be reduced by this approach in a cost-effective manner. Future programs however need to be more comprehensive and inclusive, and potentially could also deliver other predictive genetic tests like polygenic risk scores and screening for late onset treatable monogenic diseases. What does the current data suggest about the ideal model for delivering such a program?
Panel Debate: The Benefits and Risks of Using Genomic Data in Clinical Decision Making
This panel debate will explore the potential benefits and risks of using genomic data in clinical decision making within the NHS. On the one hand, genomic data can provide doctors with important information about a patient's genetic makeup, which can help to tailor treatment plans and improve patient outcomes. On the other hand, there are concerns about the privacy and security of genomic data, as well as the potential for discrimination based on genetic information. The panel will discuss these issues and consider the best ways to balance the benefits and risks of using genomics in clinical care.
Case Study - Bringing Epigenetics to the Clinical Practice (Confirmed)
Case Study - Chronomics
Epigenetic data is able to capture the impact of genetic and environmental factors on complex disease risk. Recent advances in epigenetic biomarkers have highlighted its potential to clinical diagnostics and preventative healthcare. In this talk I will discuss the most immediate applications of epigenetics in the clinical practice and some of the work that Hurdle has done in this space.

Case Implementing pharmacogenomics in the NHS: lessons from the front-line (Confirmed)
Videha leads the clinical digital strategy for the NHS Progress Programme, which aims to incrementally implement pharmacogenomics in primary care. The is a user-centred project, with direct input from primary care clinicians to better understand the front-line needs and requirements of a pharmacogenomics service. In particular, Videha will share how this method helped architect a standards-based technical infrastructure to ensure scalability.
The Sustainable Workforce of the Future – Do Generations Z and Alpha have the solution? (Confirmed)
The world’s population is increasing at a dramatic rate. Since the turn of the millennium the world population has increased by 33%. This growth is set to continue for the next 80 years. Moreso, the growth is in the over 65 years population with little change predicted to birth rates. By 2100 the life expectancy in the UK is predicted to increase to over 90 years of age.
The healthcare needs of the UK population are already increasing with an increasing percentage of over sixty-fives, whilst the percentage of the population at an employable age is reducing.
Chris will look at the attitudes of the Generation Z and Generation Alpha and ask what we need to be aware of and what we need to do now to ensure we can create a workforce for the future with the skills, incentives, capacity and capability of sustaining and providing high quality services to an increasing population.
The Transformation of Nursing & Midwifery Practice through Genomics (Confirmed)
The NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliances is supporting the embedding of genomics into everyday practice. This presentation highlights how nurses and midwives are leading the way in innovations to help patients and families have equitable access to genomic healthcare.
