RenEnergy UK Ltd has successfully delivered a large-scale solar carport installation at University Hospital Wales, showcasing how renewable energy infrastructure can be implemented within a live NHS environment without disrupting critical services.

The project involved the design, installation and commissioning of a multi-storey solar carport system located within an operational hospital car park. Notably, the installation sits beneath the active Air Ambulance flight path and adjacent to a blue-light emergency access route, both of which remained fully operational throughout the construction phase.

Delivered in a highly complex clinical setting, the project required detailed planning, robust risk management and close coordination with hospital stakeholders to ensure patient care and emergency services were unaffected.

With a total installed capacity of 653.82 kWp across 1,282 solar modules, the system is expected to generate significant on-site electricity while avoiding approximately 102,148 kg of CO₂ emissions annually. The scheme also supports long-term energy resilience and helps reduce exposure to rising and volatile energy costs.

Beyond sustainability benefits, the solar carport provides additional practical value by making productive use of existing estate space and offering weather protection for staff, patients and visitors.

This project highlights how dual-use infrastructure can support NHS Net Zero ambitions while maintaining operational continuity in even the most complex healthcare environments.
