Dr Ian McNicoll
Former GP and Clinical Informatics Leader, Interoperability and Data Standards

Dr Ian McNicoll is a former Scottish GP. He is an INTEROPen UK Board member and Fellow of the BCS.
With over 40 years’ experience working at the intersection of clinical practice, digital systems and health data standards.
He has spent much of his career focused on how high-quality clinical data, coding, terminology and information modelling underpin safe, scalable interoperability across health and care systems. His work has supported the development and adoption of open standards and structured data approaches that enable shared care, automation and long-term digital transformation.
Dr McNicoll is actively involved in national interoperability initiatives and professional informatics communities, contributing to policy, governance and practical implementation. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and continues to support NHS organisations in designing data and digital systems that are clinically meaningful, user-centred and fit for future care models.
