Dr Howell is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Medical Oncology and Honorary Consultant Medical Oncologist specialising in breast cancer treatment at The Christie and Breast Cancer risk prediction and prevention at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. He Is director of the Manchester Breast Centre and developed and co-leads the Breast Cancer after Radiotherapy Dataset (BARD), the national programme co-ordinating enhanced screening for women at increased breast cancer risk due to prior radiotherapy. Dr Howell’s research focuses on breast cancer risk prediction and prevention and he is chief investigator on the BCAN-RAY study (Breast Cancer Risk Assessment in Young Women). BCAN-RAY is a case control study testing whether 1) mammographic density is a risk factor for women in their 30s and 2) whether BC risk assessment is acceptable in this age group. He has also established a serial breast biopsy platform at The Prevent Breast cancer Centre, Manchester, for women starting established or novel breast cancer preventive therapies, to better understand their mechanisms of action and resistance.
