Consultant Histopathologist & Cytopathologist
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
Consultant Cellular Pathologist based at Southampton, is passionate about using new technological solutions to increase efficiency in traditional Cellular Pathology workflows. One of the initial projects about 20 years ago, was to implement a telepathology system for a Remote Cytology Diagnostic Service. Over the years, he has developed bespoke workload management systems for Cellular Pathology based on RCPath workload units. More recently, he has provided clinical leadership for the digital pathology transformation project at UHS. Using innovative and creative solutions, he helped overcome major challenges integrating new IT solutions with legacy systems. He was actively involved in the selection and procurement of best of breed equipment for the project, including WSI scanners, image management system, medical grade monitors, digital powerwalls, etc. The clinical vision was to create an integrated digital system, with a single touchpoint from a pathologist's perspective. This was achieved by interfacing the LIMS with a PACS based IMS to create a bespoke reporting solution with an UI design for a positive end user experience. Having laid the foundation for digital pathology, he is currently working on implementing CE-IVD validated AI tools including the Aiforia PDL-1 AI model for lung cancer. He is also working on using Large Language Models for Retrieving and Summarising historical Cellular Pathology reports He was the recipient of the 2024 Dalton award for clinical innovation at UHS, for the work on digital transformation in Cellular Pathology.
