Over a clinical career spanning 36 years, Liz worked in acute medicine as a consultant nurse for 20 years, contributing to many changes in the service and multi-disciplinary workforce development. In 2016, she was awarded a lifetime fellowship by the National Society for Acute Medicine for her outstanding contribution to nursing development. During her career she has published 150 professional practice and academic papers, including 3 multi-professional books. Her latest book is called ‘Professional Nurse Advocates Handbook’, (2026 Wiley Publishers) addressing well-being, resilience and quality improvement in nursing. Her scientific outputs have contributed to the global evidence base and policy guidance for patient discharge from acute hospital; criteria led discharge; advancing nursing practice in acute medicine and nurse led services in hospital and community. 

After completing a NIHR funded PhD and IHR Senior Research Leaders Programme, Liz became a clinical academic in 2021, developing 3 programmes of research namely – Criteria Led Discharge (SPEED); Professional Nurse Advocates (SUStAIN-ING); Patient Perpetrated Violence against staff (VOICED). She is PI for ‘Hidden Costs of Patient Care Post Discharge’ (NIHR SSCR: 2025) and co-investigator for ‘Nursing Associates Roles in Secondary Care’, INSERT (NIHR HSDR: 2025). Liz is also a clinical associate working with the GIRFT UEC team at NHS England, where she recently presented as updated systematic review (2026) of evidence relating to criteria led discharge. Publications: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7246-0503
