Martin Johnson-Umpleby has worked in the NHS for over 25 years, beginning his career as a Health Care Assistant before qualifying as a nurse and progressing into roles spanning operations, commissioning, and senior system leadership. His journey reflects a deep, grounded understanding of frontline care, combined with extensive experience in strategic transformation.
Martin is currently the Head of Productivity and Efficiency for NHS England – North East and Yorkshire Region, where he supports NHS trusts and integrated care systems to identify and deliver opportunities to reduce unwarranted variation. He provides both subject matter expertise and hands-on improvement support, with a strong focus on achieving tangible results.
Throughout his career, Martin has led large-scale transformation programmes across complex healthcare environments, consistently placing quality at the heart of improvement. His work is driven by a passion for building sustainable models of care that enhance patient outcomes while improving system-wide productivity and efficiency.
