Clinical Director Of Virtual Healthcare HHFT. Acute, General & Colorectal Surgeon. NHS England Regional Clinical Advisor (UEC)
Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT)
Mr David Cruttenden-Wood is the Clinical Director for Virtual Healthcare for Hampshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He is also an Acute & General Surgeon specialising in Coloproctology. He currently holds a role as a regional clinical advisor for NHS England (South East) focusing on the Urgent and Emergency Care pathways with an interest in SDEC.
The CD role allows him to help develop, with his primary and community partners, an acute virtual healthcare ecosphere to make sure patients with varying levels of acuity and complexity can be cared for seamlessly as ‘one team’. His team is also working to improve inequalities in healthcare for the system by creating bespoke healthcare packages for the homeless and prison populations and those with unmet needs (high intensity users).
Within Hampshire Hospitals Foundation trust, he and his team have developed a mature portfolio of subspeciality virtual wards to provide hospital level care at home to the population of North and Mid Hampshire. Virtual monitoring, vibrant MDT discussions along with the sharing of knowledge and ideas have led to increased confidence and coordination, that has improved patient safety and care in the region.
For over 5 years he has conceptualised and developed the single point of access (SPOA) that now drives the call before convey initiative for the area. He has worked with NHSe to evaluate the benefits of virtual wards and with multiple systems in the south of England to understand the public perception of virtual healthcare.
He is passionate about making sure patients get the right care by the best team, at the right time in the best place. He has been working with the ICB to create a population healthcare strategy to reimagine the way in which we deliver healthcare to make the most difference to the patient and their community. He firmly believes that siloed healthcare working within ivory towers needs to be discontinued and we need to reimagine the best way of delivering personalised healthcare that proactively manages patients to keep communities healthy.
When David is not working, he will be found either cycling over a mountain or wakeboarding on flat water enjoying the sunshine.
