NHS Pathology Conference South 2023
The Convenzis NHS Pathology Conference provides a timely and high-value platform for NHS Pathology managers and leaders to share best practices and practical insights from across the UK, we are very excited to take the event in person.
“Consolidating pathology services allows for the most consistent, clinically appropriate turnaround times, ensuring the right test is available at the right time. It makes better use of our highly skilled workforce to deliver improved, earlier diagnostic services supporting better patient outcomes. Taking a hub and spoke approach to this consolidation can ensure an appropriate critical mass to support specialist diagnostics, so that patients have equal access to key tests, and services are sustainable.” Professor Adrian Newland, Specialist Clinical Advisor and Chair of the National Pathology Implementation and Optimisation Delivery Board.
Since 2017, 29 pathology networks have been developed to help drive out unwarranted variation and spearhead the transformation of pathology services across the country. Following this, NHS England and Improvement widened to use these networks as a key enabler of ambitions outlined in the Long-Term Plan.
The Convenzis Pathology Transformation Conference aims to provide a timely platform for the NHS pathology community to meet up, share practical insights and listen to sector-leading professionals, with the ultimate aim of empowering pathology providers to keep a foot on the pedal of innovation and integration.
Join us at the NHS Pathology Conference 2023 as we take a closer look at the current state of play across the UK pathology community and open the debate on the key issues facing the sector to date.
As with all Convenzis events, we are very proud to support the NHS and provide this exclusive conference at no cost to the sector.

Keynote Presentation - Pathology: Underpinning elective care transformation (Confirmed)
As president of the IBMS, a world leading member organisation representing 21,000 biomedical scientists, Debra will address the innovative ways in which the biomedical science sector could provide much needed relief to UK healthcare.
The future of diagnostic services will be much more proactive, supported by analysis of healthcare data harvested from a much wider population, enabled by machine learning & AI technology.
This new diagnostic paradigm will deliver improved clinical outcomes and health economy savings through earlier identification of disease and more services based in primary care or at the point of need.
The potential opportunities she will explore include the role of advance practice biomedical scientists who could act as consultant level equivalents to help reduce diagnostic backlogs, improvements and innovations within pathology practice to increase efficiencies and the use of home testing kits to improve earlier diagnosis and expedite patients to the correct point of care.

The Sustainable Workforce of the Future – Do Generations Z and Alpha have the solution? (Confirmed)
The world’s population is increasing at a dramatic rate. Since the turn of the millennium the world population has increased by 33%. This growth is set to continue for the next 80 years. Moreso, the growth is in the over 65 years population with little change predicted to birth rates. By 2100 the life expectancy in the UK is predicted to increase to over 90 years of age.
The healthcare needs of the UK population are already increasing with an increasing percentage of over sixty-fives, whilst the percentage of the population at an employable age is reducing.
Chris will look at the attitudes of the Generation Z and Generation Alpha and ask what we need to be aware of and what we need to do now to ensure we can create a workforce for the future with the skills, incentives, capacity and capability of sustaining and providing high quality services to an increasing population.

Case Study - Automated Outsourcing
Outsourcing is now a fact of life for NHS pathology departments, with increasing numbers and complexity of cases being sent out to a growing number of third-party organisations that are rapidly expanding their capacity for both Dry and Wet cases.
Unfortunately, the initial export and consequential reimportation of cases, from and to a Trust’s LIMS can involve a significant amount of manual processing that absorbs large amounts of time, causes processing delays and is inherently error prone.
In this day and age, is it economic or clinically safe to have administrative staff manually cutting and pasting clinical text and data between systems?
My presentation outlines the TalkingPoint solution for automated case transfer, as used by a growing number of Trusts who are supported by a choice of outsourcing companies.
How does a system change? (Confirmed)
Organisations in all sectors have had to face and cope with massive change, both externally and internally for many years. This often brings turbulence to our different environments, including our work environments. None of us would have predicted the scale and pace of change through the pandemic, and emerging from this time we feel the effect of this huge turbulence, which has altered irrevocably the psychological contract between our organisations and our employees. For possibly the first time, in some cases, we have had to think about what we can do for our staff as well what they can do for us. In this context, leadership as well as management effectiveness is crucial and we must learn to understand what it means to experience true system change. Individuals are organisations are being called upon to awaken to a new knowing, an integrity and courage to do what you say and love what you know.
This presentation will create awareness of the depth of that change as we now consider how does a system change?
